Although I always have the utmost respect for the work of Stanley Kubrick, I have mixed feelings about "The Shining." Even from the first survey, I never felt that scares me as much as it should. But it is a movie I simply can not be seen again from time to time, because visually, like most of Kubrick's films, is so satisfactory, and Blu-ray version is still pending. I'm not in the script or performances live except to say that sometimes yes, sometimes not. But the Blu-rayDisco lead the technical results of the film. The camera is excellent as expected, but the frequent use of Steadicam, and here used by Kubrick for the first time, is the first call attention to itself.
I am pleased that the BD was released in 1.78:1 ratio, I'm sure that was presented in the theater with a 1.37:1 35mm apparently masked in the projector to 1.78:1, or something like that to come, I am. In the first aerial photographsShot of the hotel, as the DVD 1.33:1, the blades of the helicopter camera showed clearly visible at the top of the frame. I'm sure Kubrick would never allow this, as his eye for detail and I do not think it was 1980, many theaters in the United States presents films in 1.37:1. The video quality of Blu-ray release is impressive in its clarity, color balance and freedom from grain and the rotor blades are nowhere to be seen.
Somehow I 'sImpression that the musical soundtrack was a bit 'too much a good thing, I think at a higher level on the basis of the dialogue track remixed for this release. The music of this film was made largely from existing concert pieces by Bartok, Ligeti, et al. al. Therefore, the greatest impact for this film, music, and in many places, it's best and needling as intrusive or overbearing as often. Play the film in a completely dark roomand at a level lower than normal audio help feelings of discomfort that would have the viewer.
This version makes me pine for a Blu-ray version of Barry Lyndon.
